Leioa Catering School was founded in 1981, after the Tourism and Trading department of the Basque country made a research study on the growth expected in the Catering industry. It started in Plentzia,in the school year 81-82, by teaching a higher level of Catering and Tourism, specialized in catering.
The philosophy behind vocational training requires us to take a practical approach to the teaching of an activity like cooking, which is why the university Campus was the final site chosen to build our school in 1983. This was also great to meet the needs for these kinds of studies.
We started serving from two canteens, one which had already been operating in the past and a newly built restaurant. Later on another canteen was opened, the one known as the buffet.
The relocation to the UPV/EHU was a milestone for the identity of the centre, as it brought about some advantages that have since marked the evolution of the school. The advantages are the following:
● A higher quality education.
● Better resources: installations and food.
● Real clients for the students.
● Collaboration with several schools in projects that interest us both.
● Our students get involved with the university’s environment.
● Capacity for a higher number of students. It is the biggest catering school in Euskadi.
In the 97/98 school year the LOGSE was applied and the education model changed to the one we have today. To adapt to this new situation, a charcuterie and bakery workshop were added, as well as a new cafeteria service.
After long negotiations with the UPV and the Education Department, we got a new building for the school in the UPV/EHU campus.
The 2003/2004 school year started in this new location, the one we have today. This meant a great improvement in comparison with the previous infrastructures and equipment since we are the leading edge in this sector, not just as a catering school but as a catering company.
